Avian Design specializes in the use of mature, stable, and secure open-source web technologies. Technologies we use frequently are PHP for scripting, CSS for accessibility and presentation, MySQL for database functionality, and of course X/HTML for semantic structure. Open-source technologies such as WordPress and Drupal are favorites because they employ these technologies and because of their robust development communities.

The open-source development community is very active and provides a high level of support for developers. This development environment is also an exceptionally valuable asset for web services users and clients who can benefit from the expertise of many developers. Continual development improves existing web publishing systems, and extends these systems to provide new levels of service. Web publishing systems such as WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla are continuously being improved and expanded. At Avian, we find this process extremely valuable and encouraging. Open-source systems are not going away anytime soon. They are in fact some of the most widely used systems used today.

Our design approach emphasizes a humane degree of simplicity at every level of development. In our view, web sites and web-based systems should provide the high levels of functionality and reliability with the simplest possible user interface. Web users shouldn’t have to learn how to use a web site. Standards-based web interface design is one of our core practices.
